This patient was photographed in Guatemala, Central America, exhibiting a condition known as typhus gangrene of the right foot, which was determined to be due to a case of typhus fever, also referred to as epidemic louse-borne typhus caused by the bacterium, Rickettsia prowazekii. Note how the toes, and the lateral border of the foot’s plantar surface, had developed a blackened coloration, indicative of tissue necrosis, or gangrene. |
