Description: This late 1960s photograph depicts the swollen feet, also known as “pedal edema”, of a Nigerian child, (see also PHIL ID# 6901), who is suffering from kwashiorkor, a disease brought on due to a severe dietary protein deficiency. The feet of this child reveal pitting edema, which occurs as a result of pressure applied by an examiner’s fingertips upon the skin, causing an indentation in the swollen, fluid filled skin that persists for a long period of time after the release of the pressure; note the pressure points in both feet of this child.
