- Description:
- Line illustration demonstrating the procedure for measuring jugular venous distension on a patient using the external jugular vein, with the patient elevated between 30-45º when the pressure is higher than normal. Note: the internal jugular veing is generally preferred for measuring central venous pressure, but can be difficult to interpret, especially for an inexperienced examiner. The external jugular vein typically provides accurate measurements for venous pressure.
