    Description: This photograph depicted the right foot of a plague victim, which displayed areas of gangrene, especially in the distal toes, which had been due to a systemically disseminated plague infection, caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis. The dissemination of Y. pestis bacteria, predisposes plague patients to abnormal coagulation within the blood vessels of the distal extremities, including the eventual sloughing of the dead skin.

    Description: This late 1960s photograph depicts the swollen feet, also known as “pedal edema”, of a Nigerian child, (see also PHIL ID# 6901), who is suffering from kwashiorkor, a disease brought on due to a severe dietary protein deficiency. The feet of this child reveal pitting edema, which occurs as a result of pressure applied by an examiner’s fingertips upon the skin, causing an indentation in the swollen, fluid filled skin that persists for a long period of time after the release of the pressure; note the pressure points in both feet of this child.
